【Product details】
Presenting a timeless set of five lacquered plates from Japan's Showa period, each piece meticulously handcrafted with the traditional tamenuri technique, showcasing a rich, deep luster. The surfaces are adorned with the iconic maki-e artistry, featuring serene pine motifs, gentle avian forms in flight, and understated boat sails that allude to quiet seascapes. This tableau of pine, birds, and sails is more than mere decoration; it is a symphony of symbols, where the pine represents longevity and steadfastness, the birds suggest freedom and transcendence, and the boat sails hint at journeys and adventure.
Tamenuri lacquer work involves applying multiple layers of lacquer to achieve a depth of color that is both complex and lustrous, a true testament to the artisan's skill. The gold maki-e, a technique where gold powder is sprinkled onto lacquer while still wet, provides a stark, beautiful contrast to the dark, pooled lacquer background, resulting in a shimmering depiction that seems to dance with light.
These plates bear the gentle signs of their age and history, with some expected wear and maki-e loss, which do not detract from their elegance but rather tell a story of their cherished past. Please refer to the photographs for a detailed look at their condition and to appreciate the intricate beauty of these traditional Japanese art pieces.
