【Product details】
This exquisitely crafted helmet-shaped bento box is a remarkable artifact from the late Edo period, offering a unique blend of practicality and artistry. Composed of six containers, six plates, a base, one ceramic flask, a lid, and a pair of metal kuwagata (helmet crests), it exemplifies traditional Japanese culture and craftsmanship.
The exterior features a black lacquer finish, with a striking gold dragon motif adorning the front plate through the intricate technique of maki-e. The dragon symbolizes strength, power, and good fortune in Japanese culture, representing the warrior spirit and nobility.
Internally, the bento box presents a vibrant vermillion color, commonly associated with protection and longevity. Each plate within is adorned with a singular, delicately rendered flower: chrysanthemums for rejuvenation, plums for resilience, and daffodils representing grace.
Previously exhibited at the Izumo City Museum of Cultural Transmission, this piece comes with a letter of appreciation from the museum's director, denoting its display from October 1 to November 23, during the Heisei era's 10th year.
Please note that signs of aging such as surface wear, patina, stains, lacquer cracks, and minor chips, as well as a small dent from an impact are present, there are areas where the lacquer has been retouched. The color of the lacquer on the pointed top part differs slightly from the other areas, adding to the unique character of this piece. Please refer to the provided photographs for a detailed view of its condition.
