Unknown - "Ehon nanköki" (History of Nanko) - 1800

Year 1800, Japan, Edo period. Story of the legendary Samurai Nanko, patron saint of kamikaze warriors. Old Japanese book made with the Ukiyo-e technique from the Edo period, in the year 1800. Original volume of the work entitled "Ehon nanköki" ("History of Nanko"). "Nanko" is the name of the samurai Kusunoki Masashige (1294 - 1336), Japan's national hero and patron of Japanese Kamikazes in World War II. Nanko fought in the 14th century on behalf of Emperor Go-Daigo when he fought the Kamakura Shogunate for power in Japan. The book narrates one of the most decisive and heroic deeds of this samurai: the defense of the castle of Chihaya in 1333, a long battle against a much superior army. In this battle he used everything from rolling logs to boiling water against the enemy. During the Edo period, the legend of Kusunoki as a patriotic hero was forged, receiving the name of Nankö or Dai-Nankö, an image of the samurai ideal of loyalty, courage, and devotion to the emperor. For this reason, Kusunoki would later be the patron of the kamikazes during World War II, since they considered themselves his spiritual heirs by sacrificing his life for the Emperor. The book is illustrated with 24 pages of engravings, most of which are battle scenes: attackers scaling the walls freehand, defenders shooting arrows, pouring boiling water on the attackers, etc. Japanese language (original version). Dimensions: 12.5x15.5 cm. Cover + 50 pages. Traditional Japanese binding, in good condition, with normal signs of use, see photos. Covers decorated with embossed motifs and a tile with the name of the work on the front cover. The interior is in good condition, also with some normal signs of use, see photos. Copy printed on fine folded Japanese paper. (history orient military army tactical war Middle Ages medieval soldier knight empire rising sun chronicle narration).
