On the reverse, the figure of Roma is depicted seated left on a shield, holding Victory and a spear, with the inscription ROMAE AETERNAE. Antoniniani were a type of Roman coin introduced during the reign of Caracalla, intended to alleviate the shortage of silver in circulation.
