Published by Tsutaya Kichizo, the print depicts a scene from the Kabuki play “Yugao in the Moonlight at the Summer Palace” (“Natsuzashiki Tsuki Yugao”), set in the Heian era. It narrates the tale of a nobleman falling in love with a beautiful woman named Yugao. The art captures the essence of a summer night's garden scene, where Yugao and her maids are enjoying the moonlight. Yugao is portrayed as an elegant oiran (high class courtesan), while her attendants are each dressed in vibrant, elaborate kimonos, enhancing the atmosphere of a balmy summer evening.
