Speaking of his practice, McCurry has said: “What matters most is that each picture stands on its own, with its own place and feeling.” Pictured here, an elder of the Rabari tribe in Rajasthan displays a vivid orange beard and a penetrating gaze. Rabari tribal elder. Rajasthan, India. 2010. “The Rabari, a nomadic herder tribe of camels and cattle, have roamed Northwest India for centuries. As grazing lands disappear, their ways of life continue to change. Now only a small percentage of Rabari are nomads. Their distinctive art, textiles and jewelry, combine to give their identity a unique aesthetic.”
