A Very Rare and Beautiful Painted Pottery Figure of Carriage Driver, Western Han (202 BC - 8 AD)

This rare painted pottery figure is stylized as a carriage driver from Western Han dynasty, with holes in the sleeves of his hands, which would have been used when he was attached to the carriage. The pottery figures of Han dynasty are usually standing or kneeling, but this type of carriage driver is only found in the Maoling Mausoleum of Emperor Wu of the Western Han Dynasty, which is very rare.

A previous private collection, London, acquired before 2000.

Condition:
Overall in good condition. Some abrasion caused by age. Partial chipping on the lower right hand. The base edge has a couple of small chips. There is a chipping about 2.5 cm long from the bottom of the right hand to the base. Overall surface is covered with soil. No restoration.
