Indus Valley Pottery Mother Goddess Idol - Ancient Fertility Cult Artefact! Circa 3000-2500 BC heavily restored This charming pottery sculpture, representing a Mother Goddess is depicted standing with outstretched hands on both sides. The depiction includes a well-defined waist, and broad hips covered with a short skirt. The head features a bird-like face with large hollow eyes and an arching hairstyle. Crafted primarily from terracotta, these idols were discovered in various sites across the Indus Valley region, notably at Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa. The predominant function of these idols was likely religious or ritualistic in nature, serving as objects of veneration or devotion. Scholars propose that these idols possibly embodied a fertility cult, with the mother goddess symbolizing fecundity, abundance, and maternal protection. Their widespread presence in domestic and religious contexts suggests their significance in everyday life and religious practices of the Indus Valley populace. Cf. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Accession Number: 2001.305. Dimensions: 85mm x 30mm; Weight: 19g Provenance: Private UK Ancient Art Collection formerly acquired on the UK, European, and USA Art Markets from pre-2000 Collections.
