Caroline Pichler was the daughter of court counselor Franz Sales von Greiner (1732-1798) and Charlotte (Caroline) Hieronymus (1740-1815), a chamberwoman and reader to Empress Maria Theresa. Her brother-in-law was Anton Pichler (1770-1823), a famous bookseller and publisher, who also published some of her books. Like her brother, she received a strong education (including in natural sciences and in religious and myth teaching) having grown up an artistic family, and she learned several languages (Latin, French, Italian, English). She received singing and piano lessons and is known for having been the student of Mozart and Haydn.
