Spagna - Comandante Cavaliere Croce dell'Ordine Militare e di Cavalleria Ospedaliera di San Lazzaro di

Spain, commander Cross of the Military and Hospitaller Cavalry Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Nazareth. “Atavis et Armis.” Good condition. Made in several parts, green and white enamels. The box is later. Established in the holy land centuries before the Crusades, they cared for and protected Christian pilgrims. In the year 1099, with the taking of Jerusalem by the Knights Templar, the monks of Saint Lazarus offered their services to the newly established kingdom. From the year 1115 they formed an independent community among the Eastern Orders with some crusader knights. In 1244, the knights of Saint Lazarus took part in the battle of Gaza, in which all the combatants died. Other members of the same Order fought alongside the Templars, the Hospitallers and the Teutonics, also under those of Saint Louis, in the disastrous battle of Mansura (1250) and were part of the Crusades in the expeditions to Syria (1250 to 1254) and the siege of the fortress of San Juan de Acre, which had been in the hands of the Christians since the first crusade. Expelled from the East, the order spread throughout Europe. In the Middle Ages, 1490, Pope Innocent VIII unified the Order of Saint Lazarus with that of Saint John of Jerusalem. In France, King Henry IV united the Order of Saint Lazarus with that of Carmel. The order continued to carry out military work against the Turks, the Ottoman Empire. In the 17th century, the Lazarists assembled a fleet to fight corsairs and pirates, choosing Saint Maló as the center of their maritime operations. It is currently still in force and is represented in France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Holland, Switzerland, Portugal and Spain.
