This exquisite hanging scroll from the Edo period is a testament to the timeless art of Japanese calligraphy, featuring a poem meticulously inscribed in sumi ink by the renowned poet and calligrapher, Kagawa Kageki.

Kagawa Kageki, also known as Juntoku, Keitoku, Ginnosuke, Shinjuro, Shikibu, and Chosuke, was a prominent figure in the late Edo period. He studied under Kagawa Kagetsura and Ozawa Roan, and founded the Keien school of poetry, which emphasized pure emotion and stood in opposition to the ancient reverence principles of Kamo no Mabuchi and others.

Kageki's signature graces the lower right of the scroll, adding a personal touch from the artist's hand to this work of literary art. The mounting of the scroll is traditionally crafted, with the wooden ends providing a graceful weight that ensures the scroll hangs elegantly. The delicately textured paper provides a perfect canvas for the flowing script, showcasing Kageki's masterful brushwork and poetic expression.

As a testament to its journey through time, the scroll bears the marks of its age, with signs of wear, creasing, stains, and some damage at the top. These imperfections only serve to enhance the scroll's character and charm, offering a glimpse into the rich history it has witnessed.

Dimensions: approx. H 118.5 cm W 50.5 cm
