Sliced and carved Egyptian scarab, restored. The scarab from Egypt was seen in mythology as a holy animal. The dung beetle, which has the habit of pushing dung balls, was seen as the force behind the daily cycle of the sun that rises in the east and sets in the west. The beetles also seemed to spontaneously originate from manure, because it was not known at the time that the larva (which looks different) pupates and ends up in the manure. I presume 19th century but may also be older in very good to excellent condition 231 grams. Diameter 9 cm Height 4 cm. Will be very carefully packaged and shipped with a track & trace number
