Willem van de Wakker, a wandering telegrapher.
Vincent gave painting lessons to Willem van de Wakker (1859-1927). Van de Wakker was a telegrapher at the post office in Nuenen and a amateur painter. When Vincent saw his art work at the painter shop Baijens, he wanted to meet him. Van de Wakker then lived in Eindhoven, just like Antoon Hermans and Anton Kerssemakers, whom Vincent taught as well. It was his plan to ask them to give him painting materials in exchange for lessons. Vincent liked teaching painting, as this brought him into contact with people.
A lot of people went to the Van Gogh Museum Vincentre to
also visit the (temporary) exhibition about the four Eindhoven
painter friends of Vincent van Gogh. About one of them, the Eindhoven
railway telegrapher Willem van de Wakker, was told that Vincent once
took him away from his station office during work time. They had to paint urgently!
Visitors wanted to know a bit more about that man. Who was
Willem van de Wakker? He was a pupil of Vincent van Gogh in 1884/1885.
Unsold work
In the Van Gogh Museum Vincentre now features four works by Willem van de
Wakker. Every visitor can decide for themselves to which extent they exhibit traits of
his teacher Vincent van Gogh. We can, however, determine
that there is one similarity between Willem and his teacher Vincent: both
painters did not sell any work during their lives.
After his death on 30 April 1927, the
Van de Wakker family tried to
sell Willem’s paintings
at Sotheby's. Everything, however, went unsold
and was then divided among the family members.
In 2012, the Vincentre,
as part of their exhibition "Brabant
en Den Haag uit de doeken” received a royal
gift, consisting of four watercolours by
Willem van de Wakker.
