A very beautiful old hand operated clothes-press, very industrial look. Look at the beautiful cast-iron gears, stunning cast- iron. A mangle is an instrument that was used in the past to remove water from washed fabrics and at the same time ironing it flat. The fabric would be pulled through between the two rollers, the distance in between of which can be adjusted. This pressed the water from the clothes. This was later replaced by the spin-dryer. In the 21st century the mangle is hardly ever used anymore. However, in commercial laundries the mangle (although thoroughly modernised) is still widely used. The word lives on in the Dutch expression “Door de mangel halen”, which means to put someone under pressure, figuratively spoken of course. (source: Wikipedia) Beautiful patina and detailing.
