Mahogany Dutch measuring stick yardstick from 1844, marked; J. & A V. D Sande. Breskens. (Dutch Zeeuws Vlaanderen) Wooden yardstick of 1 metre, yard inlaid with copper markings. The burnt letters on the side of the yard are year letters. Depending on the font and the type, it gives an indication of the year in which the yard was calibrated. The gauger went by the manufacturers with a fixed standard size and checked whether the measuring rod still had an exact yard. If the measuring stick met the conditions, the year letter was burned in it. The first calibration on this yard is the year letter Q: 1844-46.
