“Sitting child”. Terracotta statue of Mary Claerhout. 14 x 15 x 10 cm. Mounted on a wooden base. In very good condition. Claerhout was born in 1939, in Pittem. She made statues of terracotta, bronze, and porcelain. Her work is strongly evocative and narrative. The importance of her work can hardly be overestimated. In Antwerp, for example, you will find her work in the subway stations Opera and Van Eeden, the Hotel School PIVA, the ACV-building, Leuven, Turnhout, Tienen etc. At the European Parliament in Brussels, the official statue of Europe can be found, and near Koekelberg a majestic Damiaan sculpture. In the final years before her death she focused on making sculptures of porcelain.
