This sacristy piece of furniture was commissioned by Cardinal Camillo Astalli, a member of the Roman nobility. It is a beautiful 17th century cabinet coming from Eastern Sicily.
The structure and the decorative sculptures of this sacristy cabinet are made of walnut wood, its size is truly impressive. The all round carved wooden elements were made with the gouging technique, that is using chisel blades with a curved section.
The cabinet has three parts: the lower one is a large container consisting of three modules, each made of four drawers (one of which is double). The central body is divided into three parts, each with two doors. The upper section consists of two side crests and a central panel with the archbishop coat of arms of the Astalli family.
These pieces of furniture were commissioned by the ancestral families of Astallis / Pamphilis, of Roman origin. This sacristy cabinet comes from one of the monasteries surrounding the metropolitan area of the city of Catania. It was moved to Palermo probably because of the last world war. The pieces of furniture has been kept into a renowned antiques market in Palermo by some antiques sellers in the second half of the 1960s. At the time, the cabinet was disassembled (probably due to transport needs). My grandfather found it and bought it and then put the pieces together in 1966.
