Font, Alfonso - 2x Original page - Peter the Whaler - Dangerous Work - (1973)

Two Incredible Pen and Ink illustration boards by Alfonso Font, drawn for the 8th episode of a comic book adaptation of 'Peter the Whaler' by W H G Kingston, published in 'Look & Learn' issue 620 (1st August 1973) Font was a young artist when he drew these at the age of just 27. His use of texture, oversize panels, contrast, figure drawing and superb line work all go towards making these a pair of stunning examples. Font brings alive the story's characters with his fabulous ink work. On these pages, Peter and the crew have hit an iceberg and their evil Captain commands the marines to shoot at any crew member who attempts to leave the ship despite it sinking. Just managing to get to safety, Peter and a few survivors are rescued by a whaling ship and he becomes part of the crew, finally becoming whalers themselves. These pages are directly from the publisher many years ago and have never been exposed to sunlight. An extremely rare chance to own some fabulous early work by the brilliant Alfonso Font, who worked on Tex, Dylan Dog, Taxi, The Black Ace...etc Font is an award-winning artist, having won awards including the highly coveted “Yellow Kid”. Each page measures 35 x 46 cm and has been pasted onto a slightly larger more rigid board at the time of publication. It seems a text box was also moved by the publisher in the final panel, from the top to the bottom in order not to obscure the image. This has resulted in a very slight surface tear, sometimes known as a ‘tape ghost’.
