Full Title "Londina Illustrata Graphic and historic memorials of Moasteries, churches, chapels, schools, charitable foundations, palaces, halls, courts, processions, places of early amusement, and moder and present theatres, in the cities and suburns of London and Westminster."
Here we are offering the two volumes of Londia Illustrata from 1819. 1st Edition.
The text pages are complete, but unfortunately, many of the plates have been removed, so there are only 60 of 206 plates. As a result, we are really offering this as a collection of 60 lovely historical and architectural views of London from 1819.
Most of the plates are in excellent condition, with just a little darkening to the edges, but one has tears and some loss to the edge (see photos). The plates are all full page, mostly 39cm x 30cm but with several double page so 39cm x 60cm. These are mainly architectural plans.
The plates all have an accompanying text of 4-8 pages, with a wealth of information about the London that was being lost by 1819. Although we only offer 60 of the plates, we believe the text is complete, so there are perhap 800 pages of text. Included are some fascinating essays, so for example, 8 pages on the history of the Great Fire of London with an accompanying plan of the area where it started etc. Sad not to have the plates for these pages, but still an interesting read!
In addition to the plates, there is, bound in, a four page manuscript document telling the tale of Mulled Jack, a chimney sweep turned highway man. This is in a clear hand and easily read (In English) by John Girdlestone.
There is also bound in a page from a London magazine of 1806 showing a bookseller of the time from Cornhill.
Where the plates have been removed, the binding is not great. Volume I has become almost disbound, and is holding together by the binding string. A few pages are loose but present. Volume 2 is slightly better but still in a loose condition. As we say, we offer this as a collection of plates, so please fogive the binding.
The volumes both bear the ex libris of one John Girdlestone. We can find little about him, but there was a 10 volume manuscript work on historical curiosities by him sold at auction some years ago. The hand writing on the manuscript portion here is the same, so it was clearly the same man.
We apologise for the shipping cost. This item is about 7kg packed, and shipping is expensive for us! We are not making any money on the shipping.
