WOUT WILGENBURG (1944-2022)-WALKING COBRA Original oil painting on canvas-WALKING-100 x 80 cm unframed-signed: Wout Wilgenburg. Works by Dutch expressionistisch painter and sculptor Wout Wilgenburg (1944-2022) are in the permanent collection of the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Centraal Museum in Utrecht, the Netherlands, among others. In 1970, the Guggenheim Museum even recognised the genius with a solo exhibition. In the 1960s and 1970s, Wilgenburg was the best- paid and most successful sculptor in the Netherlands. In the 1990s, however, disaster struck: Wilgenburg had an accident with a grinding wheel, injuring his right arm and rendering him unable to sculpt. He becomes addicted to morphine. Partly due to the pressure of prior success, he Implodes. He starts behaving self-destructively and works against his own career. He no longer wants to sell paintings. except to meet his basic needs. Hence, few of his works have circulated within the art market in recent decades. By 1989, Wilgenburg had moved to Belgium, where he died in poverty in 2022. Despite the self-manipulated decline of his career, his works recall an important, idiosyncratic artist. His oeuvre of spontaneous representations and rendering of fierce emotions will surely lead to an uplift in the near future. His infantile way of depicting figures and faces, use of bright and unmixed basic colours, vitalism, spontaneous representation and rendering of intense emotions leans heavily towards the way Cobra artists like Karel Appel or Comeille painted. Like them, he rejects the academic and opts for the spontaneous.
