The photos were taken by Steven Meisel, and in addition to Madonna, Vanilla Ice, Naomi Campbell and Isabella Rossellini appear in the book. The book was published in the fall of 1992, at the same time as Madonna's album Erotica. Despite the high retail price, it sold out within hours of release. It came in an aluminum sealed sleeve that had to be cut open to get to the book. Also included was a CD with one song: an alternative version of Madonna's hit single "Erotica", entitled "Erotic". Madonna came under fire, especially in the United States, because of the sexually explicit photos. She responded to this criticism in her song "Human nature" (1994): "Ooops, I didn't know I couldn't talk about sex."
