De Maria was born in Foglianise in Campania in 1954 and grew up in Turin in Piedmont. At first he studied medicine and specialized in psychiatry, but did not practice. In the middle of the 70s he made pencil and pastel drawings, as well as watercolor paintings on writing paper and later canvas paintings. The first wall painting was created in 1977. Nicola de Maria is a painter of the Italian transavant-garde. The term transavant-garde was coined by the art historian Achille Bonito Oliva. In contrast to Sandro Chia, Francesco Clemente, Enzo Cucchi, Mimmo Paladino and Carlo Maria Mariani, he works abstractly.
