Illustrated with portrait frontispiece plus 7 full-page illustrations. Hardback bound in gilt decorated cloth. Gilt edged all round. Good condition: Binding with slight rubbing to corners and spine edges. Internally, just a couple of small tanned area on the second contents page and the first page of chapter 1. There is a name on the inside of the front cover. Binding with slight rubbing to corners and edges. At the time of publication, the name Doctor Livingstone was known to everyone. This biography was published nearly 10 years after his death. The Prefatory Note describes "his large-hearted for the poor negro, his deep hatred of the accursed slave trade, his sturdy independence, strong iron will, stern tenacity of purpose and calm fortitude under trouble or disaster, stamps him a truly great man...... Already we have had many missions and expeditions following up in the paths he opened and although the results are not great as yet, one cannot doubt but that a mighty future is in store for Africa." The Life and Adventures of Dr. Livingstone in the interior of South Africa comprising a description of the regions which he traversed; an account of missionary pioneers; and chapters on cotton cultivation, slavery wild animals, etc., etc. London: James Blackwood & Co., [c1875] 12mo (18x13 cm); xii, 300, [8] pages. Frontispiece and illustrated title page, black&white illustrations throughout. Hardcover with red decorative cloth and gilt and white decorations and lettering on spine and front board. Condition good: Mild wear to spine ends and board corners, some light spotting to boards. Interior with moderate foxing and tanning to endpapers and page edges. Rare spotting, otherwise clean. “The prayers of all good men will go back with Dr. Livingstone to Africa, whither, it seems, he is shortly to return and those who are most anxious for the diffusion of Gospel principles over the benighted regions which he has lately traversed, and which are to be the scene of his future Missionary operations, will be most earnest in their petitions to the Almighty for his success, and most ready to render that pecuniary assistance to him and the excellent society of which he has proved himself so efficient an agent.”
