Written by Charles Alexander Johns (1811-1874), an English botanist and priest. This work ran more than fifty editions, such was its popularity. It describes the plants of Britain, with their common and Latin names and their uses. The author also published a number of works on botany and natural history, such as 'Forest Trees of Britain', 'Sea Weeds' and 'The Cottage Flower Garden'. Illustrated with 96 coloured botanical plates including frontispiece by E. N. Gwatkin, and 245 cuts in the text. Published by George Routledge and Sons, Limited, London, c1919. Publishers’ original green bevelled boards, spine lettered in gilt, upper cover with floral design in gilt within gilt line border. Book Dimensions: 22.5 x 14.5 x 4.5 cm and Number of Pages: 378 including Glossary of Some Botanical Terms, English Index, Latin Index, and Index to Pipe-worts, Sedges, and Grasses Condition Firm and well-bound copy. Light wear to boards’ corners, and to head and foot of spin. Internally; the book is in very good condition. No names or inscriptions. Light marks of some dried flowers left at one time within few pages. Text is fresh, and pages are clean, with occasional foxing marks to the margin of few pages. All plates are present and bright (Please see pictures).
