"As a student Timm Rautert started an extensive program of experimentation with the photographic medium which he concluded in 1973 under the title "Bildanalytische Photographie". His subsequent work in photo-journalism focused on social themes in German culture. At the same time he worked on projects of his own - the most well-known being the series "Deutsche in Uniform" which he produced in 1974. Beginning the following year, he published several books in co-operation with Otl Aicher which tried to develop an analytic form of presentation for reportage photography. Since the 1990s he has devoted most of his time to extensive portrait series. When We Don’t See You, You Don’t See Us Either is the definitive monograph on Timm Rautert’s career. Timm Rautert, born in Tuchola in 1941, studied photography under Otto Steinert at the Folkwang School of Design in Essen from 1966 to 1971. Among his recent book projects are: Gehäuse des Unsichtbaren (1992); Eigenes Leben (1994); Koordinaten (2000); Arbeiten (2000), and Deutsche in Uniform (2007). Rautert has worked since 1993 as professor of photography at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig." (from the publisher)
