Robert E. Peary - The North Pole - 1910

Scarce first edition, with fascinating text and interesting photographs plates Robert Peary's interesting account of his expedition in 1908-09 to the North Pole, upon which expedition he claimed to have reached the Pole. This was a controversial claim and was widely debated alongside a competing claim made by Frederick Cook. Peary's claim is still debated to this day, with some thinking that he simply just came within a few miles of the Pole. This volume explains Peary's 1908-09 expedition and his discovery of the Pole, an exciting account. A pleasing copy of the arctic explorer's travel narrative of the tundra. Item Description First edition of this well-illustrated work, detailing Peary's expedition to the North Pole. With an Introduction by Theodore Roosevelt. The book is illustrated with 115 illustrations from photographs, including photogravures of Peary, 2 more photogravures, 16 special plates, and 96 plates. Published by Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1910. Publishers' original sea-green cloth with border edges ruled in white, gilt lettering, and central gilt medallion featuring a bust of Peary on upper board. A white image of a polar bear on artic ice on the back cover is rubbed and faded. Top page edges gilt. Book Dimensions: 26 x 20 x 5 cm and Number of Pages: 326 including 3 Appendix and Index Weight over 1.6 kg without packaging Condition External covers are faded and marked, with wear to boards’ corners, edges, and to head and foot of spine.
