Shepard Fairey (OBEY) (1970) - Amsterdam ICON XXX

Signed offset Lithograph by American street artist Shepard Fairy (Obey). Open edition. Special Custom Design made to celebrate Sheperd Fairy's exhibition "Printed Matters: Raise the Level" show in STRAAT Museum (Amsterdam) from Aug 13th until Oct 15th 2023. Amsterdam ICON XXX. Offset lithograph on thick white paper. 24 x 36 inches (61 x 91 cm). Andre the Giant portrait in black above Amsterdam's triple X. Red and black on white paper. The print is brand new and was never framed. It will be shipped rolled in a sturdy tube and insured, which means a slightly higer postage cost. ABOUT THE ARTWORK: This print was created and released exclusively for the Printed Matters: Raise the Level exhibition in Amsterdam. It features the iconic OBEY visual evolved from the "Andre the Giant Has a Posse" visual that has been seen across diverse urban landscapes to challenge traditional notions of art and transforms public spaces into unconventional galleries. By merging it with the striking Amsterdam iconic visual of the 3 crosses, he develops a strong and highly decorative visual. It is unlikely this design will be reprinted, and though not numbered, we believe it is a great collector's item. Fairey describes the OBEY propaganda as an experiment in Phenomenology. Quoting Heidegger on OBEYGIANT.com, he describes Phenomenology as “the process of letting things manifest themselves.” With a philosophy of “the medium is the message,” Fairey claims OBEY is about questioning purpose and your surroundings. But ultimately, argues that while OBEY itself has no real meaning, it is reflective of the personality and sensibilities of the consumer. ABOUT THE ARTIST: Shepard Fairey, who has been signing his work as Obey, is an American street artist, muralist and graphic designer born in 1970 whose work stands at the intersection of art and activism. Fairey’s artistic practice revolves around the belief in the power of art to inspire social change and challenge the status quo. Throughout his career, Fairey has remained dedicated to using his art to initiate conversations and raise awareness on a range of issues.
