DESCRIPTION
Gyokusen-dō 玉川堂 is a metalworking company based in Tsubame, Niigata Prefecture, Japan, specializing in copperware forging. It was founded by the first-generation Tamagawa Kakube 玉川覚兵衛 in 1816 and has been producing copperware through hammering techniques for over 200 years. In 1873, during the 6th year of the Meiji era, Gyokusen-dō participated in the Vienna International Exposition, marking Japan's first official international exhibition, and adopted the name "Gyokusen-dō 玉川堂" for the first time. The company has received awards at overseas expositions and has had the honor of presenting its products to the Imperial Family. It is currently registered as an intangible cultural heritage.
Copperware forging is a technique that involves hammering a single sheet of copper to create three-dimensional products. Gyokusen-dō utilizes a variety of hammers, numbering in the hundreds, to create intricate designs, and the surface is colored through chemical reactions. One of its distinctive features is that the luster of the copperware increases with use.
This is a wonderful piece that embodies Japanese tradition and craftsmanship.
