Ancient Greek, Hellenistic Pottery Oil Lamp
Circa 5th-4th century BC
This pottery oil lamp features a relatively tall compartment with a small spout and a stepped-in rim, designed for efficient oil burning. Its raised flat roundel with a pouring hole ensures easy refuelling, making it a practical and essential household item in antiquity.
Oil lamps of this type served as essential lighting devices in domestic and public spaces. The method of operation involved filling the lamp's central reservoir with oil through the designated filling hole. A wick, placed in the nozzle, absorbed the oil, enabling it to burn steadily when lit.
Dimensions: 50mm x 80mm; weight 100g
Provenance: Private UK Ancient Art Collection formerly acquired on the UK, European, and USA Art Markets from pre-2000 Collections.
