W G Hanking (XX) - The barque Stratsaad Lehmkuhl on the high seas.

I am offering for auction a superb 20th century watercolour of the barque Stratsaad Lehmkuhl on the high seas, by listed artist W G Hanking. Signed bottom right. The painting measures 33 x 23 cm. The frame is 50 x 49 cm. Condition of the painting is excellent. Please view all photos for accurate condition. Ready to hang. Statsraad Lehmkuhl is a three-masted steel barque, built in 1914 in Bremerhaven, Germany as a training ship for the German merchant navy and originally called Grossherzog Friedrich August. She was used as a stationary school ship in Germany for most of the First World War, becoming a trophy of war at the end of the war. She was bought by the Norweigan Shipowners Association in 1923 at the instigation of Kristofer Lehmkuhl after whom the ship was named, in order to further sail training in Norway. Statsraad Lehmkuhl started sail training in Norway, transferring to the Bergen School Ship Foundation in 1924 where she was run until 1966 with the exception of five years during the Second World War when she was renamed Westwärts. A Bergen ship owner bought the ship in 1967 to continue using her for sail training doing so at his own expense between 1968 and 1972 until the oil crisis in 1973 when she was laid up in Bergen Harbour. In 1978, she was donated to the Stiftelsen Seilskipet Statsraad Lehmkuhl – The Foundation for the Tall Ship Statsraad Lehmkuhl, which now owns and operates the ship. Please note. Due to the fragile nature of old frames and glass, our shippers do not provide insurance for any damage caused during transit. We go to great lengths to ensure each painting is packed and protected to a very high standard but sadly cannot compensate or refund for any damage occurring to frames or glass during transit. Therefore the frame and any glass is a gift to you with zero value and you are bidding on the artwork only. Due to Brexit, there are delays at EU customs borders though the situation is improving. Please do not blame me for delays or any customs duty payable. I really appreciate your understanding and patience. Steve.
