A Rare and Beautiful Marble Torso of Bodhisattva, Eastern Wei (534 - 550 AD), Hebei
H15×W16.5×D6 cm (H22.5 cm with stand) / weight 2.43 kg

This is a finely carved torso of Bodhisattva holding a lotus bud in the right hand and a votive vessel in the left hand. The ribbon hangs down to its twists and sides of the body, the necklace is flat on the chest, and the belt crosses into the ring on the abdomen. The development of Buddhist sculpture of the Eastern Wei can be described as a slight modification of iconography and style from previous periods. The figures are fuller in form, which reveals the growing interest in form over line, and a masterful ability to incorporate the play of light in the overall composition through high-relief modeling.
