Smooth silver decorated with crest on the end of the handle, surrounded by floral patterns and a sailing three-master. On the reverse, a difficult to photograph dotted engraving: Fenger & Co. in Riga 1844. Marked with City stamp Riga, year 1844, content stamp 84 and a master stamp. Re-assayer mark ZII. Many skippers from the northern provinces - especially Groningen - sailed on the Baltic Sea in the 19th century, right up to the coast of Russia. Spoons like these were therefore called Baltic spoons or Captains silver. They were most likely business gifts, which were engraved back in The Netherlands and used as occasional spoon. A fine collection is kept in the "Kapiteinshuis" in Pekela. There are many variations on the handle decoration, a boat is fairly rare. Beautiful item, some irregulalrities on the bowl.
