The work depicts the moment in which the saint is about to pierce Lucifer with his spear, to drive him out of the Kingdom of Heaven. The pictures of the Archangel Michael driving the devil away are allegorical. The angels are trying to oppose his work in the world. Lucifer would have been the most important of the Angels, but he did not want to depend on God, so Hell was created: to give his creature what he wanted, God had him driven out of his realm and made him the God of Hell, a kingdom of his own. The work comes from a private collection in the town of Venice. This collection gathered many beautiful marble works of saints and religious figures in a large hall. The sculpture has always been kept indoors. This sculpture in particular was matched with another one representing Saint George (they were often depicted together).
