Eala Frya Fresena, the motto for the coat of arms of East Friesland in the north of Germany. The motto is often mistranslated as "Greetings, free Frisians!", but it was the reversal of feudal exhaustion and is better translated as "Get up, free Frisians!". According to 16th century sources, it was spoken in the Upstalsboom in Aurich. Frisian judges met during Pentecost and traditionally spoke of Lever dood als Slaav, or in English, rather dead than slave.
The motto refers to the legendary "Frisian freedom", a right to no rule besides accepting the Holy Roman Empire and a christian God. The judge was supposed to have been granted the Frisian support of Pope Leo IV by Charles (not a contemporary of Charlemagne in the Middle Ages). It was said to have been renewed by Charles the Fat in 885 to save him from the Normans.
