Fonderia Chiurazzi - Lupul Capitolin mare - 9 Kg - Bronz pictat - 1924

Patina bronze sculpture made in 1924 (MCMXXIV) by ‘Fonderia Chiurazzi’ and depicting the Capitoline Wolf while suckling Romulus and Remus. About the ‘Fonderia Chiurazzi’: The Chiurazzis were a family of foundrymen and artist whose forefather, Gennaro, was born in Naples in 1842. A pupil of P. Masulli at the Institute of Fine Arts, he began his activity in Naples in an artistic foundry workshop set up in the Royal Hostel of the Poor, whose management made some rooms available to Gennaro. Since the end of the century, according to De Gubernatis, he gained great fame, not only in Italy but also abroad, for the perfection of his bronze reproductions and for the high quality of his work, consisting in casting of works by contemporary artists and reproductions of bronzes and classical works from the Vesuvian cities and kept in the museums of Naples. Gennaro’s fame spread still further as many of his artworks were sent to various international exhibits. De Gubernatis recalls how Gennaro Chiurazzi was awarded a gold medal at the exhibitions in New Orleans and Turin in 1884 - he also received awards at the St. Louis exhibition in 1904. De Gubernatis also highlights visits to the Chiurazzi foundry by members of Italian and foreign royal families, as well as commissions from abroad, such as the reproduction of the Farnese Bull group for the representative of the Chilean Republic. And so on... The Capitoline Wolf is a bronze sculpture kept at Musei Capitolini in Rome, and it is almost full size. It has been in Rome since ancient times. The statue is the very icon of the foundation of the city of Rome. The legend of Rhea Silvia recounts how she got pregnant by the god Mars while she was a vestal virgin and became the mother of the twins Romulus and Remus. King Numitor, grandfather of the twins, was overthrown by his brother Amulius in Alba Longa. To avoid that, once they had grown up they could claim the usurped throne, Amulius ordered them to be put inside a basket and cast into the Tiber River. This basket ran aground at the foot of a hill, where the twins were found by a she-wolf who cared for them until they were found by Faustulus, a shepherd. The den of the she-wolf was a cave known as the Lupercal, near the Palatine Hill. Length: 40 cm. Width: 19.5 cm. Height: 25.5 cm. Base: 35 x 19.5 cm. Weight: 9 Kg. Made in 1924 (MCMXXIV) by ‘Fonderia Chiurazzi’. Signature and date are engraved on the base.
