A Fridor Sewing machine complete with carry-case, manual and various documentation - from the Netherlands circa 1955.
In 1949 the production of the Fridor sewing machines commenced. The annual production was in the region of 20,000 machines. The characteristics of the machine are: The so-called "free arm" which made it possible to embroider and darn stockings and socks. The machine could be controlled hands-free with a knee control. Zig-zag function. They had a soft green colour (until then most machines were black) – portable in supplied carry-case. Weight: 11 kg.
At the Amsterdam Household Expo in 1948, the ladies jostled each other at the Fridor stand to see this machine. This sewing machine with a 'free arm' that could not only sew - but darn socks and embroider. According to the newspaper, the Fridor sewing machine was one of the 'attractions' at the Utrecht Expo Fair in 1951. At the Ladies' Fair in The Hague in the same year in the Houtrusthallen, every 10th visitor even had a chance to win this 'every woman's dream!'.
