Anonymous street artist ROA is famous for his large-scale, monochromatic murals of rats, birds, rabbits, fish, and other wildlife, which he often depicts in states of decay. At times, ROA situates his visceral, decrepit creatures in the streets of Ghent, in his native Belgium, though he has executed public projects in other global cities as well. His major concerns include conservation and the boundaries between life, death, and the afterlife. Growing up, the artist took inspiration from graffiti and the American cultures of skateboarding and hip-hop. ROA’s work has graced walls in London, New York, Berlin, Warsaw, Madrid, Moscow, Los Angeles, Mexico City, and Paris, and he has exhibited in numerous galleries across the world. In 2011, the artist was included in the groundbreaking “Art in the Streets” exhibition at MOCA Los Angeles alongside street art icons such as Banksy and Invader.
