The Turkish kanun is a mesmerizing and culturally rich instrument that holds a revered place in traditional Turkish and Middle Eastern music. This enchanting string instrument is known for its evocative sound and intricate craftsmanship, contributing a distinctive timbre to the musical landscape.
The kanun is a type of zither with a trapezoidal shape, featuring 78 to 81 strings stretched across its wooden body. These strings are divided into groups, with three strings per note, allowing for a wide range of melodic and harmonic possibilities. The musician plays the kanun by plucking the strings with small plectrums, known as "mızrap," held between the index fingers and thumbs.
What makes the kanun truly remarkable is its ability to produce a vast spectrum of tones, ranging from hauntingly delicate melodies to vibrant, resonant harmonies. Its complex tuning system, often based on quarter-tones, enables musicians to achieve microtonal nuances, adding depth and emotional richness to the music.
Traditionally, the kanun has been an integral part of classical Ottoman and Arabic music, seamlessly blending with other traditional instruments like the oud, ney, and violin in ensembles. However, its versatility extends beyond traditional genres, finding a place in contemporary and fusion music as well.
The kanun has got hardcase and it has got minor traces of early usage. Completely It's a handcrafted instrument made of wood.
