A late 19th century rotating French Lark mirror of Moustache shape. Used for hunting small songbirds.
A larkspur is a traditional decoy for hunting migratory birds. It is generally made of wood and is decorated with small shards of mirror, metal or colored rhinestones. The hunter turns his mirror, thus creating light effects, which call out to the small birds, in order to lure them. Hunting for the “mirror” attracts larks during their migration.
The most interesting part of this system is precisely the wooden shape which contains the shards of mirror, called “glacillons”. There are different models: policeman's hat, silhouette of a predatory bird, more or less refined bird bust, parallelogram, trapezoidal shape, "capon" shape, cone.
This one is of a "Moustache" shape.
Condition report:
Fair condition, has been restored. One of the mirrors is missing and other are damaged.
