Early Greek Easter icon, circa 1600 , possibly from a Cretan painter or from a Greek painter that did seek refuge in Venice. The icon depicts the raising of Jesus from the tomb with Easter. This iconography points out to a Western influenced workshop, because the traditional Orthodox way to depict Easter is the descend into hell of Jesus. This Easter icon shows Jesus rising from the grave with a flag, which is inspired on Western resurrection scenes. The tomb is painted in an abstract way, almost like a Malevich painting. Under the tomb lays a sleeping soldier. Jesus in flanked by angels. A very interesting icon stating that East and West where connected through Venice. Size 22 x 18 cm. Various retouches.
