Kanzan and Jittoku 寒山拾得 - Nakayama Shūko 中山秋湖(1876 - ) - Japonia
Kanzan and Jitotu were legendary poet monks who lived during the Tang Dynasty in China, and their eccentric behavior that transcended the mundane was considered to be a ``wind madness.'' In Chinese Zen Buddhism, ``fukyo'' was considered important as a state of enlightenment, and the state of renunciation in Kanzan Jitoku was often depicted as a traditional painting theme in China and Japan, as it was related to Buddhism. This special feature considers the meaning expressed by Kanzan Jitoku in China and Japan, and asks how people have discovered its worldview.
