This unusual bright metalic orange lacquered kabuto from the early Edo period is shaped as a Portugese helmet. A style called ‘Nanban’. The textured Kawari-nuri lacquered crest could indicate it was made for a high ranking samurai.
The kabuto and crest are lacquered with a technique of yakitsuke, a clear high gloss layer Urushi baked over a metal. The black neckguards are laced with blue silk lacing.
European armor was brought into Japan through trade with Spain and Portugal in the 16th century. With the introduction of firearms, the Japanese would imitate those suits of armor (designed to deflect bullets) and began producing them in Japan. These armors or infact any item derived from a ‘babaric’ origin, were collectively called nanban (“Southern barbarian”).
