Headrests from the Horn of Africa were highly personal objects used daily. Today, they survive only in a few isolated regions of the continent, particularly in the area where the four borders of Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, and South Sudan meet.
This exquisite headrest originates from the Omo Valley and is believed to be crafted by the Kaara, Hamer, or Banna people.
Its distinctive saddle-shaped lintel is supported by a flat foot that terminates in a conical hollow base. Traditionally, this base was filled with grease to preserve the headrest.
Carved from a single piece of hardwood, the headrest exhibits impeccable balance and features a stunning glazed dark patina, enhanced by delicate metal inlays adorning the wood.
