Wols - Wols Photograph - 2013

HIGHLY IMPRESSIVE, BIG PHOTOBOOK with more than 400 (!) pages by Wols (1913-1951) - celebrating the extraordinary photographer, painter and printmaker`s 100th birthday. Published for the exhibitions at: "Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, Kupferstich-Kabinett" (in 2013), "Martin-Gropius-Bau, Berlin" (in 2014) and at "Musée d`Art moderne de la Ville de Paris Herbst" (in 2014). Wols was the pseudonym of Alfred Otto Wolfgang Schulze (27th of may 1913 till 1st of september 1951) was a German painter and photographer, predominantly active in france. His inspiration to become an artist derived from the work of the artists Paul Klee, Otto Dix and George Grosz. His advisor, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, instructed him to pursue his artistic endeavours in Paris. His encounters with Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir awakened a lively interest in the philosophy of Existentialism. Welcome to the "GERMAN PHOTOBOOKS" auction by Ecki Heuser (5Uhr30.com, Cologne) - with more than 100 fantastic lots. IF YOU WIN MORE THAN 1 OF MY BOOKS IN THIS AUCTION, YOU WILL PAY ONLY 1 X SHIPPING COSTS - WORLDWIDE. Hatje Cantz, Ostfildern. 2013. First edition, first printing. Hardback (as issued). 237 x 308 mm. 228 pages. 802 photos. Edited by Michael Hering. Forword: Hartwig Fischer, Bernhard Maaz, Gereon Sievernich. Text: Michael Hering, Nina Schleif, Claudia Schnitzer. Conversation with Laszlo Glozer by Michael Hering. Layout: Sarah Nöllenheidt. Text in German. Condition: Inside fresh and clean with no marks and with no foxing. Outside fresh with light trace of use; little bump at the top left corner of the rear side (so some pages with tiny dog-ear, but nearly invisible, so with no bigger consequence for inside). Overall fine condition. "As a photographer, Wols has yet to be discovered. The artistically ambitious and non-conformist young man went from Dresden to Paris in 1932, where he began a career as a portrait photographer. By 1939 he had created an impressive body of photographic works, but after 1943 he was not able to continue it, due to adverse conditions and his turn to drawing and painting. After his death, these photographs were almost forgotten. Today the Dresden Kupferstich Kabinett has the most important collection of his photographic oeuvre` rare prints from original negatives and valuable original prints made by the artist`s hand. For the first time Wols` photographs will be extensively honored in celebration of his 100th birthday. The catalogue and the exhibition shift the focus away from the `Wols myth` and place his artistic achievements firmly in the foreground." (from the publisher)
