This elegant two-line script, written on silk, showcases the beautiful form and precise strokes characteristic of traditional Japanese calligraphy. Unzan, born into a family with a storied history—his grandfather being Bungo-no-kami Hanabusa Masafusa, a former retainer of the shogunate—held several prestigious positions, including the 41st head priest of Motoyama Honkokuji Temple in Minobu and later the 78th head priest of Sogenji Temple, adopting the Buddhist name Nichiga. He was also known as Shak Kanryu Joushuin. The scroll ends are made of bone, adding a distinctive touch to the piece. Although there are some signs of aging such as slight stains, the piece is well-preserved, as depicted in the accompanying photographs. It stands as a testament to the cultural richness of the Taisho era and the artistry of Hanabusa Unzan. Dimensions: approx.
