A black & red Shunkei-style lacquered wooden house shrine 仏壇 (butsudan) with a lot of excessive details. The gilded interior of the butsudan has detailed shrine elements decorated with many different auspicious symbols, like music instruments of deities, phoenixes, lotus flowers and chrysanthemums. Please take a close look at the photos of the interior to get a grasp of the various details. The altar is made to house three votive figures. Hanging in two alcoves are devotive hanging scrolls 掛け軸 (kakejiku). The altar is raised by galleries with a lotus design. Underneath a pair of sliding doors with golden maki-e (lacquer design) of a Chinese landscape, and a hidden pull-out tray The shrine can be closed off by a pair of black lacquered interior doors with gold lacquer lattice work and adorned with maki-e panels. And by a pair of black lacquer outer doors with gold lacquered cartouches fitted with decorative metal hardware and a large ornate sliding lock in front. Outside of the inner door the butsudan is equipped with 5 more drawers of different sizes each with their own beautiful golden maki-e motifs. Placed on a base featuring three drawers and a pair of sliding doors. When acquired new, in Japan these shrines are extremely expensive to buy! Period: Japan – Mid-Shôwa period (Mid-20th century). Approx. dimensions: Height 146.8 cm, Width 76.6 cm with closed doors , width with open doors 139.2 cm, Depth 48.8 cm. In a very good condition with minimal traces of wear conform age and normal use.
