Charming rectangular tebako 手箱 (box for personal accessories) is beautifully veneered with cherry tree bark 桜皮 (ôhi), known for its distinctive natural pattern and silky sheen. The lid features a delicately carved relief design of a helmet 兜 (kabuto) and sword 刀 (katana), surrounded by swirling cherry blossoms 桜 (sakura).
The bottomside with a label: ‘Cherry tree bark from Kakunodate’ 角館の桜皮. Kakunodate is a town located in Senboku District, Akita Prefecture, Japan. The town is famed for its well-preserved samurai houses and the proliferation of cherry trees.
Period: Japan - Mid-Shôwa period (Circa 1950s-60s).
