The vermillion lacquered surface is elegantly adorned with detailed maki-e designs of chrysanthemums and bellflowers, set amidst geometric diamond patterns enhanced with gold leaf. Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to produce intricate designs. The "Hidehira-nuri" technique specifically features decorations known as "Yusoku Hishimon," which include diamond and tanzaku (slender strips) shaped gold leaf arranged over Genji clouds, offering a richly symbolic and traditional motif in the Japanese aristocratic style. Chrysanthemums in Japanese culture symbolize longevity and rejuvenation, while bellflowers represent unchanging love, making this piece not only a visually stunning work but also rich in symbolism. Ichigo Iccho (1898-1991) was born in Ishikawa Prefecture and has been celebrated for his unique color sensibility, bold artistic decisions, and superior compositional skills, making him one of Japan’s highest-regarded maki-e artisans. His creations were selected several times for the prestigious Nitten exhibition and even garnered the patronage of the Crown Princess Michiko. Please note, there are signs of wear consistent with age, including slight scratches, lacquer chips, and general signs of use.
