Jean-Baptiste Marc Bourgery / Nicolas-Henri Jacob - La Médecine Opératoire or Surgery - 1837

RARE ANATOMICAL ATLAS IN FOLIO SIZE from "Traité Complet de l'Anatomie de l'Homme" (Complete Treatise on the Anatomy of Man) by Jean Baptiste Marc BOURGERY (1797-1849), this is the sixth volume and contains 93 amazing plates in large format: H 480 x W 350 mm or 18.9 by 13.8 inches. Published in Paris by C.A. Delaunay, 1837, first edition. This ancient book is fully illustrated and is dedicated to Surgery (La Médecine Opératoire). The book shows with detailed illustrations all the surgical techniques of the time for any part of the body from head to toe, including examples of cosmetic surgery, all accompanied by 280 pages of description. The lithographs are in good condition as per photo, clean and detailed, almost free from defects and printed on thick paper of excellent quality. This work, is the most comprehensive, and perhaps the most beautiful anatomical and surgical atlas of the 19th century. It was published in parts over 23 years and represented the life work of Bourgery. For each detailed illustration there is a descriptive page. "ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED ANATOMICAL AND SURGICAL TREATISES EVER PUBLISHED IN ANY LANGUAGE" (Heirs of Hippocrates 1569). The compilation of Bourgery's Anatomy was encouraged by the great Georges Cuvier (1769-1832). It was issued in eight volumes between 1831 and 1854, and re-issued 1866-1871 with additional plates and revised text. This volume is from the FIRST EDITION and the artist who was responsible of the spectacular illustrations, was Nicolas-Henri Jacob (1782-1871) a student of the neo-classical painter of the French Revolution, Jacques-Louis David. Bourgery considered Jacob his full collaborator in the project. Before embarking on this project Jacob had gained considerable experience drawing on stone for lithographic publications. Jacob's artistic collaborators on the project were his wife, Charlotte Hublier-Jacob, Jean Baptiste Leveillé, Edmond Pochet, E. Roussin, and others. The physiologist Claude Bernard played a somewhat greater editorial role in the slightly expanded second edition of the work published from 1866 to 1871. Text in French, Latin and Greek. Magnificent work of medical anatomy, beautiful lithographic plates of the human body and very detailed, complete and rare. References: Heirs of Hippocrates 1569; Roberts & Tomlinson pp. 536-38; Waller 1372; Wellcome II, p. 214; Brunet I, 1179; Delécluze, Étienne-Jean (1840). Author: Jean-Baptiste Marc Bourgery (1797-1849) was a French physician and anatomist who was a native of Orléans. Within 20 years, along with the artist Nicolas Henri Jacob, he created the comprehensive anatomy textbook "Traité Complet de l'Anatomie de l'Homme" (published between 1831-1854). Bourgery started his studies in medicine in 1813 in Paris, he also attended lectures of the naturalist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, a professor at the Museum of Natural History in Paris. After passing the entrance examination, Bourgery worked as a clinical intern with René Laennec at the Hôpital Necker and with Guillaume Dupuytren at the Hôtel Dieu. From 1830, together with the painter and illustrator Nicolas Henri Jacob, Bourgery worked on the planning of his most important work. It took nearly 20 years of teamwork to complete this masterpiece. From 1840 on, he had been writing scientific papers (often provided with lithographs), which were then published by the Academy of Sciences in Paris. In addition, Bourgery also took part in the production of anatomical models made of paper stucco or papier-mâché for the Félix Thibert Anatomy Museum. Illustrator: Nicolas-Henri Jacob (1782-1871), was a French painter, draftsman and furniture architect who played a pioneering role in the art of lithography and imposed as a valuable auxiliary to scientific publishing. Henri-Nicolas Jacob was the cousin of the famous cabinetmaker Georges Jacob, Nicolas Henri was a pupil of Jacques-Louis David, Antoine Dupasquier and Jean-Jacques Morgan. In 1802, he presented a series of pen drawings at the Paris Salon and became court painter to Eugène de Beauharnais, for whom he worked from 1805 to 1814 in Milan. On his return to France, he found a job as a drawing teacher at the National Veterinary School of Alfort (1818-1830) then settled in Paris and started his drawing course. He is the master of Jean-Baptiste Léveillé. His collaborator was Edmond Pouchet, E. Roussin. His wife was the painter Charlotte Hublier. Jacob devoted himself very early to the emerging technique of lithography, of which he was one of the pioneers. His first plates were exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1819, then became recurrent from the Salon of 1824 (portraits, genre scenes, etc.): it was at this time that he began to work regularly for scientific publishing and medical. From 1830 to 1850, he devoted himself almost exclusively to the execution of the 700 lithographed plates for the monumental work of Bourgery.
