Fernando Crespo (1953) - Tata Mallku

Fernando Crespo (b. 1953 Cochabamba, Bolivia), created "Tata Mallku", which is the Qechua word for condor, the world's largest bird, in 1997 in Ludwigshafen, Germany, and sold the work later that year to German blacksmith Christian Traubel. The sculpture was created from iron rod, tin and steel, 100 pieces for the torso and 300 pieces for the feathers. The 5.7 meters wide wings can be detached for transport. The sculpture was zinc-coated, 80 kg electrodes were used. Original paint and corrosion protection. The measurements are as follows: Weight: 380 kg, total height 2300 mm, height of back 1600 mm, hed and neck 1100 mm, total length 3300 mm, spread 5700 mm, circumference 1950 mm, foot size 750 mm, legs 900 mm. The sculputre was commissioned at the occasion of a performance/exhibition of Bolivian art in Ludwigshafen, Germany in 1996 "In the Land of the Condor". In the booklet for this event, then German president Richard von Weizsäcker (1920-2015) wrote: "The common artistic experience can help us open up to different experiences that we have incommon, in spite of the very different life styles. The destructive attitude towards the environment jas a lot to do with how we Europeans live." The condor was meant to be a symbol for peace and friendship in a world threatened by division and destruction. Fernando Crespo was born on 2 December 1953 in Cochabamba, Bolivia. He obtained a degree in industrial design from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Crespo taught himself welding, by observing his older brother, and started to create sculptures from waste metal. In 1988 he won the Premio Hispanoamericano Daniel Vasquéz Diaz for sculpture. Exhibitions in Spain (1990) and Germany (1993) followed. Crespo's works include "Francis of Assisi" in Tieschen, Steiermark/Austria (2006), an iron sculpture of 9 meters height and 5 tons of weight, and "Monumento ao Empreendedor" in Vila Nova de Famalicão, Portugal (2012), a 16 meters tall sculpture of two elements of stainless steel and iron. Crespo's works are also present in many cultural centres of Bolivia. "Tata Mallku" was exhibited at the corporate headquarters of Lufthansa charter subsidiary Condor in Frankfurt-Kelsterbach, Germany, in 1997.
